Those who once went to My Dong commune, Thuy Nguyen district, Hai Phong city would probably not forget the bustling image of iron-smelting furnaces, red-hot steel all day and night and the bustle of a craft village. port land.

Cast iron craft appeared in My Dong more than half a century ago. The first person to initiate this career in My Dong was Mr. Nguyen Van Can. Before that, Mr. Cuong studied welding plowshares and made cast iron molds in Thanh Hoa. After his career, he returned to his home town to open a cast iron furnace. And from there, the iron casting industry developed into a traditional profession of the commune. 
The story goes that, in 1938, a French dredger broke its balance of 1 ton, the ship owner went to place orders everywhere but nowhere to dare to receive it. At that time, Mr. Con risked receiving and commanding a successful repair team. After this event, My Dong made a great sound, so that the casting of iron also grew stronger.

Mr. Nguyen Dang Tam, Chairman of My Dong Commune People's Committee said that in the 80s of the twentieth century, due to manual casting, limited and rudimentary designs, American Dong's products could not compete with other types. products made of advanced technology, so the craft village gradually fades. In 1992, in order to restore the traditional casting job to become a livelihood for the people in the region, the commune called on the skilled workers to transfer the craft to the villagers, so that the My Dong casting job was gradually revived.
Currently, the whole commune has more than 100 households doing iron and steel casting. Each year cast more than 30,000 tons of cast iron and steel; revenue of more than 600 billion VND / year (accounting for 90% of the commune's revenue), creating jobs for more than 1000 local laborers and more than 2000 workers in the surrounding areas with an average income of 5-10 million VND person / month. The commune has also planned a trade village area concentrated in the center of My Dong commune with an area of ​​more than 5 hectares. There are currently 22 enterprises registered to rent production and business premises.

My Dong's products are quite diverse such as ship propellers, motorcycle frames, manhole covers, water pumps, home appliances ... My Dong's products are not only consumed domestically but also exported to Europe. Europe, Germany, Korea, Japan. 
In My Dong, iron and steel casting not only exists in the form of hereditary, but many households have bravely developed into companies and businesses, each year giving tens of billions of revenue. Typically Van Do, Thanh Phuong, Phuong Nghia businesses ... 
From a poor locality, casting has brought new life to My Dong countryside. Currently, My Dong is a bright spot on the development of trade villages of Hai Phong. In the long term, in order to meet the large production conditions and ensure environmental sanitation, My Dong commune authorities are studying the plan to expand the craft villages in the direction of concentrating and mobilizing the households still in operation. small households in villages and hamlets are concentrated in craft villages.
